For the 2nd year, Jazz Week will kick off with a gala Saturday night dance party in Roxbury, where Boston jazz began. The Makanda Project, the neighborhood’s resident orchestra, returns to the grand ballroom of Hibernian Hall for this special event.
For the 3rd year, JazzBoston will bring a band to City Hall to celebrate Jazz Week and International Jazz Day with performances on the mezzanine and in the Council Chamber. The invitation comes from newly elected Council President Michelle Wu, who continues to chair the Council’s Arts and Culture Committee. JazzBoston made history by filling the chamber with live jazz for the first time ever during Jazz Week 2014.
For the 3rd year, House Concerts hosted by jazz lovers in and around town will bring neighbors and friends together for intimate listening experiences. JazzBoston assists in matching hosts and ensembles and advises on logistics.
Jazz Week 2016, the Greater Boston jazz community’s celebration of the music and our extraordinary local scene, returns on April 22 for the 10th consecutive year. Its 10-day run to May 1 is scheduled once again to tie in with the national observance of April as Jazz Appreciation Month, Duke Ellington’s birthday on April 29th, and since 2012, International Jazz Day on April 30.
For the 4th year, JazzBoston will collaborate with venues, schools, and other organizations to promote the area-wide celebration of International Jazz Day.
For the 6th year, JazzBoston and Wally’s Café will co-host the presentation party for the recipient of the Jazz Journalists Association’s annual Boston Jazz Hero award. JazzBoston submits nominations on behalf of Greater Boston’s jazz community for the JJA to select from.
For the 7th year, student ensembles will herald the arrival of Jazz Week with Free Friday Kickoff Concerts in public spaces around town.
