Each two-hour session will be devoted to a different dance, reconstructed from baroque dance notation. Both dances are ballroom dances from the early 18th century that would have been "performed" at elaborate court balls and at private gatherings. No prior baroque dance experience is required -- steps needed for the dances will be taught as part of the workshop.
The repertory:
Nov. 5
La Matelotte, choreography by Raoul-Anger Feuillet
Set to a familiar tune by Marin Marais, this clever choreography makes economical use of two dance phrases, repeated in various spatial arrangement with only minor adjustments. The dance was published in 1706.
Dec. 3
La Médicis, choreography by Raoul-Anger Feuillet
This lively duple-meter dance, from 1710, is a choreographic rondeau: it uses a single phrase as a refrain, with other sequences interspersed. The music is also in rondeau form.
