Announcing a special residency every Tuesday in March at the Lizard Lounge with songwriter, bassist, and producer Kimon Kirk and his all-star band, The Meds.
This month Kimon Kirk and the virtuoso Meds debut as a fully-formed rock 'n' roll band. These monster players own virtually any genre of song-oriented popular music: crafty pop, heartfelt country, late-night jazz, edgy rockabilly, swinging blues, soul-inflected balladry nothing is off limits. Kirk, founding member of Session Americana and sideman to Aimee Mann, Sarah Borges, Melissa Ferrick, and Will Dailey, is joined by keyboardist Jamie Edwards (Aimee Mann), guitarist Lyle Brewer (Dennis Brennan), bassist Jim Haggerty (The White Owls), and drummer John Sands (Lisa Marie Presley). Kirk and the Meds celebrate the release of a new single, "Baby Who Knows," written and recorded with Aimee Mann. Band members have long worked as touring and studio session players with a variety of artists and performed as a unit with Aimee Mann, Grant-Lee Phillips, Ramona Silver, and Lori McKenna. Each week, the Meds will perform with a special musical guest, each a peerless songwriter, performer, and collaborator.
Week One: Kimon Kirk and the Meds with Ramona Silver
A deft pop-rocker who has released gem after hook-filled gem ever since making a splash in Boston in the '90s, Ramona Silver is rocking, soulful, and always completely musical, whether playing electric guitar or keyboards. Often backed by Kirk, Edwards, Haggerty, and Sands, she and her music have long been a nucleus of excitement and creativity in the New England area. Her new video, Sled Song, released this winter, sums up Boston's snowy heft with sly humor and a useful lesson in local geography. Kirk and the Meds are honored to have Silver as their first guest of the month.
Week Two: Kimon Kirk and the Meds with a Secret Special Guest
Winner of the 2013 Latin Grammy for Best New Artist, this Guatemala-born, Los Angeles-based performer is a singer and songwriter of breathtaking talent. In English and Spanish, her music floats across genres, melding modern standards, Beatles-y pop, and soulful bossa nova, all at a hoedown with Sister Rosetta Tharpe. She has performed worldwide with actor and pianist Hugh Laurie and his Copper Bottom Band, with legendary composer Van Dyke Parks, and in duet with Guatemalan superstar Ricardo Arjona on his mega-hit "Fuiste Tu." She is co-writer of the theme song to NBC's hit show Parks and Recreation and is currently touring with the acclaimed Punch Brothers.
Week Three: Kimon Kirk and the Meds with Lori McKenna
Award-winning songwriter of numerous hits for major country artists, Lori McKenna has long been a favorite performer and singer in New England. In the last decade she has become a staff writer at a major Nashville publishing house, composing for such superstars as Faith Hill, who recorded four of McKenna's songs on her album Fireflies. McKenna's new album is the critically-acclaimed Numbered Doors, produced by Mark Erelli. In the last year, McKenna, Edwards, and Kirk have begun collaborating and writing songs together as the trio Wandering Stars; this week will be the live debut of their new batch of original material.
Week Four: Kimon Kirk and the Meds with Jennifer Kimball
One of New England's most respected and inventive songwriters, Jennifer Kimball has consistently wowed and hushed audiences as solo performer and with her mighty band. She will debut material from a new album, produced by Cuddle Magic's Alec Spiegelman (her first since 2006's acclaimed Oh Hear Us) as well as play songs from her wonderful back catalogue. Kirk and Kimball have co-written and played together, and Kirk and the Meds are thrilled to join her to perform her spellbinding and innovative compositions.
Week Five: Kimon Kirk and the Meds with Chandler Travis and Steve Shook
Founders of Cape Cod's legendary rockers The Incredible Casuals and George Carlin's exclusive longtime opening act, Chandler Travis and Steve Shook are each master songwriters whose creativity knows no bounds. Kirk produced Shook's first solo album, Dignify, in 2013, and has performed and recorded with Travis on numerous occasions over the last decade as a member of Travis's celebrated Philharmonic. Both songwriting and performing heroes to Kirk and countless other devotees, Travis and Shook will perform solo and together with Kirk and the Meds on this very special evening.
